Four of the six Cabinet ministers from the pro-presidential Our Ukraine party yesterday offered to resign, citing their party’s decision to join the opposition. The four were the ministers of justice, health, culture and youth, family and sport. The prime minister, Viktor Yanukovich, said the coalition would “soon” nominate replacements on a proportional basis. Tom Warner: The only post of the four that really matters is justice, and it could be taken by a Yanukovich ally. The announcement is aimed at helping Our Ukraine’s leaders put down the revolt that was brewing within their party ahead of a party congress this Saturday. According to our sources, “operation opposition” appears to be working, the threat of a party split is receding, and Roman Bezsmertny is set to remain party leader while businessman Petro Poroshenko remains the main financier and power broker. After the congress, some of the ministers are likely to revoke their resignations and Our Ukraine might even return to coalition talks.
