German FM rejects weapons deliveries to Ukraine

German FM rejects weapons deliveries to Ukraine

2 June 2021

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas spoke against the
delivery of self-defense weaponry to Ukraine. Speaking with journalists before
a NATO video conference, Maas claimed that “arms deliveries won’t help”.
Unian.info reports that besides small arms, Ukraine is asking for equipment
such as radios.

Maas’ statement comes after a May 29 interview of
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky to Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in
which he discussed the lack of German aid.

James Hydzik: Zelensky’s remarks regarding aid smack of bad timing at best. Zelensky
claimed that the Greens, who are poised to win the German election in
September, were offering to send such aid to Ukraine. It would have made more
sense to wait until after the election to push the German government in this
direction.
