Latest single-day record set of COVID-19 cases

Cases of the COVID-19 disease caused by the
coronavirus reached a new single-day record of 1,271 on Aug. 4, Health Minister
Maksym Stepanov announced at his daily press briefing this morning. Twenty-four
people died, while 914 recovered, he said. A record 293 patients were
hospitalized on Aug. 4. The most new infections were in the Lviv region (156),
the city of Kyiv (150) and the Kharkiv region (148).

Zenon Zawada: Stepanov offered few comments on the record-setting numbers, sticking
to the standard recommendations on social distancing and wearing masks. This is
evidence of a deliberate policy of not antagonizing the public ahead of the
October local elections and silently imposing local restrictions.
