Poroshenko, Trump discuss Crimea, Donbas

25 November 2016

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko had a telephone conversation with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Nov. 24 during which they discussed the illegal annexation of Crimea and the military aggression in Donbas, the Ukrainian president revealed at a press conference in Brussels. Poroshenko said he offered him “very detailed information” about Crimea and Donbas, without offering details. “Ukraine has strong bipartisan support in the U.S. Congress,” Poroshenko added. In his turn, EU Council President Donald Tusk said he also discussed Ukraine with Trump, whose reaction was “at minimum prospective as compared to some statements during his election campaign.”

Zenon Zawada: It’s a very positive sign for Ukraine that Trump has spoken with Poroshenko so soon after his election and following a Nov. 14 phone call with Russian President Putin. We can expect a new approach by the Trump administration to the conflict in Ukraine that will attempt to establish peace, which is positive for the investment community.
