President, PM Take Steps Towards Compromise

23 April 2008

Following talks with the government, President Viktor Yushchenko, said that he was willing to suspend his order to disband the Parliament if it agreed to pass laws forbidding MPs from swapping parties. However, Yushchenko added that he would no budge on his plans to hold new elections, saying only the date was flexible.  In response, PM Viktor Yanukovich said that they had agreed on all points except new elections and that he expected an amicable settlement to be reaching in the next few days. Nick Piazza:  Both the President and the PM have substantially tuned down their negative rhetoric and look to be aiming for compromise as all parties in the conflict seem to be having some reservations about the capability of the Constitutional Court to end this crisis.
