Pro-Russian separatists cut coal to Donbasenergo’s Sloviansk power plant

Pro-Russian separatists cut coal to Donbasenergo’s Sloviansk power plant

19 June 2014

Pro-Russian separatists have damaged the railway leading to Donbasenergo’s (DOEN UK) Sloviansk thermal power plant (TPP), reported on June 18 Volodymyr Chepoviy, spokesman for the Information-Analytical Center of the National Security and Defense Council. The separatists aim to stop the power plant from functioning and disconnect it from Ukraine’s power system, he said.

In its daily update on June 19, Donbasenergo reported its Sloviansk TPP is operating normally, while also confirming that railway connection to the station is damaged. Its coal stockpile as of today is about 51,500 tons, and its daily consumption is 3,200-3,500 tons at the current level of power output (7.8 GWh/day). At the current output level, the stockpile will be exhausted in 15 days. Should the company not be able to secure new supplies of coal in the coming days, it said it will switch to a smaller power unit to cut daily coal consumption to 420 tons.

In related news, Borys Sorkin, an Energy Ministry official, stated that the Uglegorsk TPP of Centrenergo (CEEN UK) as well as the Zuyiv and Kurakhove TPPs of DTEK (DTEKUA) have limited stocks of water due to damage to the water channel Siverskiy Donets–Donbas, the Interfax news agency reported on June 18. The current conditions in the vicinity of the damage do not allow for repair, he said, while the power stations have water reserves for about 30 days of work.

Alexander Paraschiy: The Sloviansk TPP of Donbasenergo is located in the most serious conflict zone of the Donetsk Oblast. It produced about 28% of Donbasenergo’s total power, year-to date. Another site at high risk of attack is the Luhansk TPP of DTEK, located in the hottest Luhansk Oblast war zone surrounding the town of Shchastia. But so far, all the region’s power plants have nearly equal risk of technical failure from possible attacks on the regions’s energy infrastructure. These reports indicate that the longer the war continues, the more risk for real damage to infrastructure in the Donbas region and stoppage of all its enterprises.
