Reaching agreements with the current Ukrainian
government is not possible, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Nov.
15, as reported by his press service. It will be a great achievement if
Ukrainian-Hungarian relations don’t worsen after the presidential elections.
“We hope that Ukraine will be unifying and friendly, not persecuting Hungarians
who are Ukrainian citizens today, and takes advantage of the possibility of
Hungary being prepared to participate in the development of Zakarpattia – as
well as beyond its borders – and support Ukraine’s stabilization and
development.”
Zenon Zawada: Orban’s statement about not being able to cooperate with the current
Ukrainian government is very similar to what Putin said the same day. Though it
can’t be certain at this point whether these two governments are coordinating
their pressure and criticism of the Poroshenko administration, the Hungarian
government’s actions certainly mimic the Kremlin’s hostile approach.
