The U.S. government held congressional elections on Nov. 4, with the Republican party gaining at least seven seats in the U.S. Senate, ensuring its first majority in the body since 2006. The Republican Party also gained at least 10 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, bolstering its majority.
Zenon Zawada: The Republican Party’s victory in these elections – and control of both chambers of the U.S. Congress – guarantees stronger support for the Ukrainian government in its war against Russia. The new Senate majority leader, U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell, has been among Congress’s strongest advocates of Ukraine throughout his 29-year career as a U.S. senator. He has been among the most outspoken critics of U.S. President Barack Obama on Ukraine. We expect to see increased arms sales, possibly beyond the defensive realm, as well as other forms of assistance.
