Russian-terrorist forces launch large-scale attack on Donetsk airport

2 October 2014

Russian-terrorist forces launched a large-scale attack using rifle fire on the Donetsk airport at 6:00 on Oct. 2, reported the same morning Vladislav Seleznev, the spokesman for the government’s anti-terrorist operation. The fighters stormed the airport four times in the last 24 hours using Grad rapid-fire rocket launchers, artillery and mortars. Ukrainian military positions were shot at more than 30 times in the last 24 hours in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, reported on Oct. 2 Dmytro Tymchuk, the editor of the Info Resist news site. The shootings occurred from tanks, mortars, rifles, rapid-fire rocket systems, and cannon artillery. Nine civilians were killed and 30 wounded during armed fighting in the city of Donetsk on Oct. 1, the City Council reported. Many of the victims were riding in public transportation or private residences. Three adults died from fragments from an explosion near a school.

Both Ukrainian forces and pro-Russian separatists are responsible for the deaths of civilians and the destruction of their homes resulting from attacks of a non-selective nature, Amnesty International Ukraine said in a report released on Oct. 2. Such attacks are a violation of international law and should only be targeted against combatants, the report said. Both sides are using Grad rapid-fire rocket launchers, which aren’t accurate and shouldn’t be used in residential areas. “The use of non-selective arms in population centers such as unguided missiles and mortars violates international law and can be equated with war crimes,” said John Dalhuisen, Europe and Central Asia program director at Amnesty International.

Zenon Zawada: The loss of the Donetsk airport will make a dent in the popularity of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and his Poroshenko Bloc party in the early parliamentary elections. It’s apparent that the Ukrainian forces aren’t dispatching additional soldiers and hardware to defend this strategic site because that would amount to escalating the warfare, a position that Poroshenko wants to avoid taking. The Russian-terrorist forces are aware of this and taking advantage of the situation.
