Terrorists suffer record losses in Donbas, extremist MP evicted

4 June 2014

Ukraine’s parliament voted on June 3 to deprive the parliamentary mandate and prosecutorial immunity of MP Oleg Tsariov for calling for the violent overthrow of the interim Ukrainian government and undermining the constitutional order of Ukraine. The majority also voted to require his arrest and his incarceration under bail. Tsariov announced the same day that he is residing in Crimea and will continue to fight the Ukrainian government.

MP Oleksandr Yefremov told parliament on June 3 that Ukrainian air forces attacked the Luhansk Oblast State Administration building, killing seven civilians inside. He said the bombing was a war crime that deserved investigation by the International Criminal Court in the Hague. In response, MP Viacheslav Kyrylenko accused Yefremov of spreading a falsehood with his statement, which he characterized as “complicity with terrorism.” “If a Ukrainian destroyer hit the administration building, nothing would be left of it,” Kyrylenko said. He called for depriving Yefremov of his parliamentary mandate and prosecutorial immunity.

In response to Yefremov’s statement, acting Parliamentary Speaker Oleksandr Turchynov accused the Party of Regions of defending the pro-Russian terrorists, pointing out they made no mention of their armed attacks on Ukrainian border guards in the Luhansk Oblast in the previous days. During a ten-hour assault on a National Guard base in the Luhansk Oblast on June 2, pro-Russian forces destroyed its parking lot, headquarters and barracks using automatic rifles, machine guns and grenade launchers. Three National Guardsmen were injured while six pro-Russian fighters were killed and 20 injured, the National Guard reported on its site, stating the unit is relocating itself.

The OSCE has grounds to believe that the June 2 explosion in the Luhansk State Oblast Administration building came from the air, possibly an airplane, OSCE spokesman Michael Bociurkiw told the BBC Ukraine news agency on June 3. He added that the OSCE’s information was based on limited observations. The OSCE had reported earlier that day that rockets fired from a plane hit the building, contradicting the Ukrainian government’s claim that the rocket was fired by the terrorists from an anti-aircraft system within the building. The press service of the Luhansk People’s Republic claimed Ukrainian planes bombed the building, killing five civilians and several fighters. The local police said eight were killed and 11 hospitalized.

In the battle for Sloviansk in the Donetsk Oblast, more than 500 pro-Russian fighters died and more than 1,500 were injured as of June 3, reported the LigaBiznesInform news agency, citing an anonymous source in the leadership of the Anti-Terrorist Operation. Information Resistance activists offered a bit different assessment: about 300 killed and about 500 injured. Three Ukrainian soldiers were killed and more than 50 injured, the source said. Heavy artillery and aviation were employed by the Ukrainian forces. “Today we practically cleaned of fighters the entire north of the Donetsk oblast,” the source said, claiming the destruction of all bases and training camps of the fighters in the region.

Since the fighting in the Donetsk Oblast began in mid-April, 181 people have been killed by the terrorists, including 59 Ukrainian soldiers, while 293 people have been injured, reported Prosecutor General Oleh Makhnitskiy. More than 7,000 residents of the city of Sloviansk and 15,000 residents of the city of Donetsk have left, the site of the Donetsk State Oblast Administration reported on June 3.

Zenon Zawada: It’s disturbing to see Yefremov, among the most influential leaders in the Luhansk Oblast, coming to the defense of the terrorists and ignoring the casualties and attacks endured by the Ukrainian armed forces. In his political maneuvering, he’s still banking on the Russians to create a permanent, separatist enclave in the Luhansk Oblast, giving him preferences, while Donetsk kingpins such as Rinat Akhmetov have abandoned such hopes. If the Ukrainian government succeeds in retaking control of the easternmost Luhansk Oblast, it will likely impose punitive measures on Yefremov and ruin his career.

Meanwhile, we can only applaud the measures taken against Tsariov, which are long overdue, and hope to see similar action against those MPs aligned with the Russians. In particular, we think it would greatly benefit the Ukrainian state to make illegal the Communist Party of Ukraine, which is actively working to undermine its territorial integrity and independence.
