U.S. President Donald
Trump appointed Robert O’Brien as his national security adviser on Sept. 18,
replacing John Bolton. While Bolton has consistently challenged Russia’s
aggressive foreign policy, O’Brien has made few public statements on Russian
President Putin. In 2012, O’Brien served as the foreign policy adviser to
Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, who took firm positions against Putin in his
2012 presidential campaign. However, an increasing number of Republican Party
leaders, including Walker, have reduced their criticism of Putin since U.S.
President Trump’s election in 2016.
