U.S. Republicans propose declaring Russia sponsor of terrorism

U.S. Republicans propose declaring Russia sponsor of terrorism

12 January 2022

Congressional Republicans put forward the Guaranteeing
Ukrainian Autonomy by Reinforcing its Defense Act, or GUARD Act on Jan. 11. The
act would authorize the spending of USD 200 million to bolster Ukraine’s air
and sea defenses, U.S. conservative media thehill.com reported. The bill, which
The Hill said is unlikely to pass into law, also called for sanctions against
the Nord Stream II pipeline if Russia attacked militarily.

Furthermore, the bill currently reads that the U.S.
government would have to officially recognize Russia as a state sponsor of
terrorism “should the Government of the Russian Federation, or any of its
proxies, advance their militaries on the territory or airspace of Ukraine
beyond the area occupied as of Dec. 15, 2021”.
