Ukraine COVID cases pass 10,000 as Health Ministry mulls lockdowns

Ukraine COVID cases pass 10,000 as Health Ministry mulls lockdowns

5 March 2021

Ukraine registered 10,155 new cases on March 4, the
Health Ministry reported in its Telegram channel. The number of new cases
registered daily has doubled over the course of the week.

Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, at a press conference,
spoke about the adaptive quarantine in place throughout the country, and how
much of the country was already in the higher orange and red zones. “Of course,
if most of the regions are in the red zones, we will most likely have to return
to the lockdown model that has already been introduced, which Ukraine has
already used,” media outlet Unian reports. Shmyhal also pointed to the
fact that Ukraine is facing the beginning of a third wave of coronavirus.

James Hydzik: The
government’s pre-holiday measures, including lockdowns, show that it is
possible to affect the infection rate. With new case numbers reaching the
volume seen in autumn, when more drastic steps were taken, are almost certainly
in the offing. There is no indication at the moment as to whether the border would
be closed for business travel under these circumstances.
