Ukraine has only slightly improved conditions for doing business, the World Bank Group revealed on Oct. 25 as part of the release of its annual Doing Business survey. Ukraine improved three levels to 80th place globally, according to the survey. “I’d like to turn your attention to three indicators of taxation, in which Ukraine rose from 107 to 84th place,” Ukrainian President Poroshenko told the National Reforms Council. “In issues of protecting investors, Ukraine rose 18 places and 17 places in ensuring the enforcement of contracts,” he said.
Zenon Zawada: These figures merely confirm the ongoing narrative on reforms in Ukraine, which is too little, too slow. The former economy minister Abromavicius, an investment banker, said in 2014 it was realistic for Ukraine to enter the top 50 countries in the Doing Business rating in two years. But he left the Cabinet because of corruption and Ukraine isn’t very close to the top 50. Of course, some progress is better than none.
