Ukraine PM calls on world leaders to maintain sanctions on Russia

Ukraine PM calls on world leaders to maintain sanctions on Russia

25 September 2014

Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk called upon the leaders of the EU, U.S. and other states to maintain the current sanctions on Russia during his address to the Security Council of the United Nations on Sept. 24. “Sanctions are the realistic path to begin true negotiations,” he said, as reported by the Ukrayinska Pravda news site. “They also enable the hammering out of a peace plan.” The Donbas war has resulted in more than 3,200 casualties since April, according to the United Nations. When addressing the Council of Foreign Relations earlier that day, Yatsenyuk called for American and European diplomats to be present for Ukraine’s negotiations with Russia “as the best path to securing peace.”

U.S. President Barack Obama authorized on USD 25 mln in nonlethal military aid to Ukraine in a Sept. 24 decree. He authorized USD 20 mln in nonlethal commodities and services and USD 5 million in defense articles and services, as well as military training.

Ukrainian forces were shot at 22 times the night of Sept. 24, reported this morning Dmytro Tymchuk, the director of the Information Resistance web site. Among their targets was the Donetsk airport, which was shot at twice. Russian Armed Forces are rotating their units rather than removing their armies from Ukraine, National Security and Defense Council spokesman Andriy Lysenko told the BBC news service on Sept. 24.  “Some are being removed, some are introduced,” he said.

Russia has partially withdrawn its armies from Ukraine though its special forces remain operating, NATO spokesman Lt. Col. Jay Janzen said on Sept. 23, as reported by the Wall Street Journal. “There has been a significant pullback of Russian conventional forces,” he said, adding that the exact numbers are hard to pinpoint. “It is clear that NATO allies need to remain vigilant.”

Zenon Zawada: Yatsenyuk is on the same page as the West’s leaders, which continue to actively support the Ukrainian government. Besides the nonlethal military aid package, U.S. President Barack Obama confirmed at the same session that sanctions will be maintained until Russia chooses the path of diplomacy over violence to resolve its conflict with Ukraine.
