Ukraine PM reveals aims for national road project in spring

Ukraine PM reveals aims for national road project in spring

22 June 2016

Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman announced on June 21 that he is aiming to launch a national road construction project in the spring worth billions of dollars. All work would be awarded in transparent tenders, financed by the World Bank, as well as private and state funds, he told a press briefing. He said the two priorities would be the north-south and east-west corridors, the improvement of which will make Ukraine an influential transit territory.

Zenon Zawada: A national road improvement project can serve as a catalyst for economic revival for Ukraine, which unfortunately has become reknown for the decrepit conditions of its roads. Not only would it produce desperately needed jobs, but it would make road traffic more economically efficient. Such a project would also boost support for the president and his party (to which Groysman belongs), which are largely unpopular at the moment.
