Ukraine reduces electricity consumption, production and export in 2008

23 January 2009

According to preliminary data from the Ministry of Fuel and Energy, Ukrainian consumers decreased electricity consumption by 0.6% yoy in 2008 (to 148 TWh): the largest drop in consumption occurred in chemical industry (-10% yoy) and metallurgy (-9% yoy); while the residential sector showed the largest consumption increase (+10% yoy). Electricity exports from Ukraine dropped by 14.5% yoy and internal production of electricity decreased by 1.8% yoy last year.

Alexander Paraschiy: We expect a 10% drop in both power production and consumption in 2009, on the back of stable export flow. Moldova refused to buy Ukrainian electricity since the beginning of 2009 (it used to buy 3 TWh annually), while Belarus is likely to buy 3 TWh this year. We expect a 12% yoy decrease in power production by thermal power plants, with double-digit decreases (12%-20%) at Vostokenergo, Centrenergo (CEEN) and Dniproenergo (DNEN), and moderate decreases (1%-3%) at Donbasenergo (DOEN) and Zakhidenergo (ZAEN).
