Ukraine Takes Another Small Step Towards The WTO.

Ukraine Takes Another Small Step Towards The WTO.

9 March 2008

Last night the United States House of Representatives repealed the Jackson-Vanik Act. Now the bill will travel back to the Senate, (which repealed the law last year), and on to the President to be signed into law. Before the USA can support Ukraine’s WTO bid this Soviet era law must be repealed. The Jackson-Vanik Act was first imposed to limit trade with Soviet Republics in 1974. Concorde Capital:  By agreeing to meet the US’s demands to join the WTO, Ukraine seems to have taken the brakes off its entry bid. We expect the abolishment of the Jackson-Vanik Act to be complete in the near future. The biggest test for Ukraine’s WTO bid will now be getting the Rada to pass the necessary legislation.  The government has said Ukraine will join the WTO this autumn.
