Viktor Yanukovich, prime minister, said during meetings with Nato’s leadership in Brussels that his government was not ready to sign a membership action plan. His comments provoked an outcry from President Yushchenko’s Our Ukraine party, which accused him of reneging on a commitment he made in the “Universal of National Unity” signed by Yushchenko, Yanukovich and others last month. Tom Warner: In our view Yanukovich was only stating the obvious, and anyway Western European governments wouldn’t have been ready to offer Ukraine to start the Nato accession membership process this year even if Ukraine had a pro-Nato government. Our Ukraine won’t pull out of talks aimed at bringing it into the ruling coalition over this, but it could be a convenient excusive if the talks fail.
