Ukraine’s Central Election Commission announced the election of Viktor Yanukovych as the next president of Ukraine on Sunday, after counting the last ballots. The final tallies were: Yanukovych – 48.95%, Tymoshenko – 45.47%. The CEC dismissed requests by Tymoshenko’s camp to recount votes in certain districts and allegations of vote fraud. According to Ukrainian law, inauguration is to take place within 30 days of the announcement. On Saturday, Yulia Tymoshenko, in a televised address – her first major statement since the election last Sunday, pledged to challenge the official results in court and said she would not recognize Yanukovych as the elected president.
