Yovanovitch nominated as U.S. ambassador to Ukraine

U.S. President Barack Obama announced on May 18 his intent to nominate Marie Yovanovitch as U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine. Yovanovitch is currently principal deputy assistant secretary in the bureau of European and Eurasian affairs, where she has served since September 2012. She previously served as U.S. Ambassador to Armenia and Kyrgyzstan. She served as the deputy chief of mission of the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv between August 2001 and June 2004.

Zenon Zawada: Yovanovitch offers much potential to U.S. diplomacy in Ukraine in this time of war, given her extensive experience in the post-Soviet sphere, and particularly her prior experience working in Kyiv. In her most recent capacity, she likely worked very closely with Victoria Nuland, which is another advantage.
