Yushchenko Gives The Rada One More Day To Pass Election Laws

31 May 2008

President Yushchenko announced this morning that he was extending the decree suspending his order dismiss the Rada for another day after the Rada failed to pass all laws required to pave the way for new elections yesterday. Nick Piazza:  The Rada got off to a good start on Wednesday with all factions returning to parliament and voted to rescind resolutions against Yushchenko that had been issued following his dismissal of the Rada, voting in favor of a bill for the new make up of the Central Election Commission (CEC). According to the new draft law, the CEC will consist of fifteen members, seven of which will be chosen by the coalition, seven by the opposition and one will be put forward by the President and Prime Minister. However, yesterday things started to breakdown again as MPs failed to reach an agreement on how to come up with a registry of eligible voters prior to the elections. As we said in our last report, we expect this process to take time but believe elections will eventually be held.
