Yushchenko Tears Up Agreement With Yanukovich, Looks At Possible Referendum.

Yushchenko Tears Up Agreement With Yanukovich, Looks At Possible Referendum.

13 January 2008

President Viktor Yushchenko removed his signature from an agreement with the opposition yesterday, that had been used as a compromise to win support for the candidacy of Prime Minister Yurii Yekhanurov.  The President said that by sacking the government, the opposition had failed to live up to its end of the agreement and thus the deal was no longer valid. Additionally Yushchenko wrote an open letter to the Rada demanding that it cancel its decision to fire the government. Concorde Capital: One of the keys of the “Memorandum Of Understanding” was that it banned Yushchenko from interfering with the political reforms that came into effect on January 1. By removing his signature, Yushchenko is now free to seek a referendum on the issue, something State Security Oleh Rybachuyk said the National Security and Defence Council would be preparing in the near future. Additionally, the annulment of the agreement also gives Yushchenko the right to reopen reviews of shady privatization deals, and prosecute those involved in election fraud during the 2004 presidential elections. Or in other words, play hardball.
