Yushchenko, Yanukovich Fail To Agree On Date For New Elections

17 May 2008

President Viktor Yushchenko and Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich failed to reach an agreement on a date for new elections at their meeting yesterday. Nick Piazza: The tide of the political standoff between Yushchenko and Yanukovich seems to be turning slightly in the latter’s favor. Over the last week Yanukovich and his party have spoken in favor of the new elections, while allowing the Communists and Socialists (the two parties most likely to be left on the sidelines following new elections) to sabotage negotiations on setting a date. Regions stall tactics seem to be paying off and if we are to see a compromise on the date by the end of the week it will likely mean elections will be in the fall.
