Zelensky administration yet to determine U.S. ambassador, news site says

18 September 2019

Officials in the President’s Office of Ukraine have
yet to agree upon a candidate for Ukraine’s ambassador to the U.S., the
pravda.com.ua news site reported on Sept. 17, citing anonymous government
sources. Among those being considered is Oleksandr Danylyuk, who is currently
serving as secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, the news
site said.

The President’s Office has arranged the visits of its
officials to the U.S. without the involvement of the Ukrainian embassy in
Washington, as protocol, Ukrainian Ambassador to the U.S. Valeriy Chaly told
Voice of America in an interview broadcast on Sept. 13. Nor will the embassy be
involved in arranging Zelensky’s visit to the U.S. this month, said Chaly. U.S.
ambassador to Ukraine William Taylor, Jr. said this month that Zelensky will
meet with U.S. President Trump at the UN between Sept. 23 and 26.

“There will be a short meeting during the UN
General Assembly this month in New York,” Chaly said. “But this won’t replace a
complete visit to Washington and the White House. Not only a meeting with the
U.S. president, but a visit to the U.S. Congress, a meeting with Republicans
and Democrats, the Energy Department, the Defense Department, the Secretary of
State … that is, with everyone who works with Ukraine.”
