Zelensky arrives in Washington

Zelenska arrived in Washington on the afternoon of Aug. 30 (local), the
president’s team reported on Facebook. Zelensky is now scheduled to meet U.S.
President Joe Biden on Sept. 1. The face-to-face meeting with Biden will
include the signing of three bilateral agreements covering defense and the
space industry, president.gov.ua reported on Aug. 27. President Biden also
announced on whitehouse.gov the authorization of an additional USD 60 mln of
military aid for Ukraine on Aug. 27.

James Hydzik: With the scope of the aftermath of the hurricane and Afghanistan
withdrawal well defined at this time, Biden will be able to turn his attention
back to Europe. Both sides are interested in roughly the same things –
preparing asymmetric responses to the completion of the Nord Stream II pipeline
and assuaging Russia hawks among their critics who are concerned about the
resolve of the Americans in terms of Ukraine. The agreements to be signed are
important, but the joint message about the course of bilateral relations will be
what sets the tone for assessments of the visit.
