Zelensky signs law creating Bureau of Economic Security

Zelensky signs law creating Bureau of Economic Security

23 March 2021

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed into law
a bill that creates the Bureau of Economic Security of Ukraine
on March 22. The announcement came as a post on the president’s website.

The law separates investigations and prosecutions for
economic crimes, as the bureau will focus on analyses of financial
transactions. It will also look at risk within the economy in general. As a
result, the bureau will assume investigative responsibilities now under the
wings of the Security Service of Ukraine and the State Tax Authority.

James Hydzik: The changes
will, at first, only contribute to the churn that constitutes tax law in
Ukraine. Economic laws, especially in terms of tax law, change often, and in
some cases, the track record of the courts is not consistent or very full.
However, the separation of investigation and enforcement may be a good thing
after the changes are in place.
