President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that he supports the
American sanctions against the former owners of Privatbank. Referring to a
video released on Facebook by the presidential administration on Mar. 13,
ukrinform.com further reports that Zelensky made a distinction between ‘big
business’ and the ‘oligarchic class’. “And surnames do not make any difference
here: Medvedchuk, Kolomoisky, Poroshenko, Akhmetov, Pinchuk, Firtash or anyone
else,” Zelensky said.
On Mar. 5, the U.S. imposed an entry ban on Ihor
Kolomoisky and his immediate family. However, no economic sanctions were
imposed.
James Hydzik: As Zelensky continues to distance himself formally from Kolomoisky,
the question becomes one of how much this will be reflected in the oligarch’s
treatment of the president in the media that he owns. Regarding the upcoming Bellingcat film and Zelensky’s handling of Yermak, the question
becomes, in part, one of Yermak’s role as a conduit for Russian communications
now that Viktor Medvedchuk’s influence is, for the moment at least, diminished.
Moreover, how Ukraine’s western partners receive and understand any
communications on the subject had better be unequivocal.
