President Volodymyr Zelensky will speak at the 76th
Session of the UN General Assembly. He will arrive in New York on Sept, 20, the
presidential website announced on the evening of Sept. 17. Besides speaking at
the UN General Assembly, Zelensky will hold bilateral meetings with political
and institutional leaders, including UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Zelensky will also meet with business representatives and investors.
James Hydzik: The General
Assembly meeting offers Zelensky an opportunity to follow up on, as well as
leverage, his visit to the White House at the beginning of the month. While his
standing among his political peers will be raised by the recent trip to
Washington, it will be the talks with investors and the business community that
will count, even if they don’t generate news. Ukraine needs, once again, to
make its case to investors. Continued institutional and American support is
part of this.
In those meetings, the issue of reform will
certainly come up. Bottom-up reform, such as the increasing use of app-driven
interaction for the populace, is a strong suit for Zelensky, and the
anti-oligarch bill coming before the Verkhovna Rada for a second reading is a
headline attempt. However, investors and the business community need neither of
these in an immediate sense. For them, judicial reform and the corporate
climate will be primary concerns, and neither of them will be the subject of
happy conversations.
