20 November 2008

Ukrzaliznytsya, Ukraine’s state-owned railway operator, said yesterday in a statement that more than 74% of its rolling stock is worn out, but remains in operation despite exceeding its normal operational lifespan. Ukrzaliznytsya said that 57% of its 1,589 electric trains are worn out and 92% of its 324 diesel locomotives. The development strategy until 2020 provides for the railway to acquire 211 new electrical trains, and 124 diesel trains.
