Luhansk residents lose trust in pro-Russian separatists

11 July 2014

Pro-Russian separatists shot up a residential neighborhood in the Luhansk region city of Syeverodonetsk in the early morning of July 10, damaging a hotel with artillery fire, reported on his Facebook page Serhiy Samarskiy, a local city councilman. Afterwards, a Russian journalist accompanied by two fighters approached local residents and claimed soldiers of the National Guard of Ukraine were responsible for the attack. The residents responded with anger, telling them not to fight in residential areas and use human shields but to go out in the fields. “And in conclusion they promised to carry out ‘the southeastern army’ with pitchforks into the field if another shooting occurs,” Samarskiy reported.

Earlier Vladislav Seleznev, the spokesman for the anti-terrorist operation, said the terrorists have resorted to shooting residential areas in order to turn the local population against Ukrainian soldiers. He reported on the morning of July 11 that three Ukrainian soldiers were killed and 12 injured in gun battles during the last 24 hours. The soldiers killed at least 50 sepratist fighters and liberated the town of Siversk and border post of Chervonopartyzansk.

Zenon Zawada: The incident in Syeverodonetsk demonstrates the losing trust and support for the pro-Russian separatists among the residents of the Donbas region. It’s not the first such incident and probably won’t be the last. Without the firm, consistent backing of Russian forces, the separatist fighters face a slow but inevitable defeat, not only because of their dwindling supplies but also their lack of organization and discipline.
