Ukraine government prepares further Euro-integration legislation

Ukraine government prepares further Euro-integration legislation

11 July 2014

Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry is drafting a national plan to implement the Association Agreement in domestic law “in order to conduct real reforms so that Euro-integration isn’t in word only,” Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin told a July 10 press briefing. The plan will have to be approved by parliament, he said. A Cabinet subdivision for Euro-integration may also be created, he said.

Ukraine’s parliamentary committee on Euro-integration issues will review on July 22 the state of preparations for ratifying the Ukraine-EU Association Agreement in parliament, said on July 10 MP Hryhoriy Nemyria of the Fatherland party, as reported by the Interfax-Ukrayina news agency. The committee will also review preparations for the national plan to implement the Association Agreement, he said. The session will be attended by Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin and representatives of the Presidential Administration, he said.

The Fatherland parliamentary faction proposes ratifying the Association Agreement and a package of laws necessary for its implementation at the soonest week of sessions, said MP Andriy Shevchenko, as reported by pravda.com.ua. The Fatherland faction has drafted at least ten bills, prepared with representatives of civil society, that are ready for review, he said.

Zenon Zawada: Complaints have been raised by politicians and civic activists about the slow pace of approving necessary Euro-integration legislation but we see much of these statements motivated by politicking. It should be a priority to pass quality legislation that has a real chance at implementation, which is what the Foreign Ministry has declared that it is committed to.
