Medvedchuk appeals to European Court of Human Rghts

Medvedchuk appeals to European Court of Human Rghts

16 June 2021

Viktor Medvedchuk
sent an appeal to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) regarding what he
called the illegal actions of the Ukrainian government directed against him.
The accusations, according to Medvedchuk ally and fellow national deputy Renat
Kuzmin, include political motivation on the part of the Ukrainian authorities
behind his criminal prosecution, gross violation of the right to a fair trial
and violation of Medvedchuk’s liberty and personal security. Kuzmin added
photos of the application form and receipt showing that it was sent to
Strasbourg, pravda.com.ua reports.

The move comes a
month after Medvedchuk was placed under house arrest on treason charges. As we reported in mid-May, Medvedchuk is under house arrest
until July 9 and he has to wear an electronic tracking bracelet.

James Hydzik: Posting
photos of the application to the ECHR to prove that the move is real may smack
of second-rate political antics. However, if ECHR takes up the case and the
Ukrainian government wins the case, then not only has the ploy backfired for
Medvedchuk himself, but President Zelensky’s overall anti-oligarch drive will
gain teeth.
