The latest polling by Kyiv International Institute of
Sociology shows that countrywide, 76% of respondents supported joining the EU,
and 68% supported joining NATO. Support is lower in the south and east of
Ukraine, but still over 50% for joining the EU and split equally,
statistically, for joining NATO, pravda.com.ua noted on Dec. 24.
Also, 49% of Ukrainians expect Russia to attack soon,
and 41% think that it won’t. However, 58% believe that the diplomatic and
defense efforts of the authorities are insufficient to stop an invasion.
James Hydzik: One effect of Russia’s saber rattling to date has been to turn opinion
in the south and east of Ukraine against it. If there is no military incursion,
the attitudes are likely to remain long after the troops have gone home.
